We priced the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction course so that it would be recession friendly. The course typically had been priced at 350EU for 20 hours of classroom teaching, a seven hour meditation day with lunch, 3 CDs and a notebook. We thought this was not a realistic price for those financially hurt by the recession. That’s why we are offering a sliding scale from 200EU to 350EU. We thought that would make the course available to almost anyone who’d be inclined to take the course.
Cost adjustments and scholarships
We will do the following three things to make the course more affordable:
(1) We are willing to have people pay in installments. The first installment should be before or at the first class. The second one by the fourth or fifth class. The third one before the final class.
(2) We are willing to give an automatic 10% concession to someone who really believes they can’t afford the minimum side of the scale (200EU). No questions asked. If you honestly think that you cannot 200EU even on installments, then you can claim a no-questions-asked concession of 10%.
(3) We are also willing to offer two scholarships in this class. We will negotiate the scholarship fee in conversation, either on the phone or in person. The course will not be free or even almost free because people typically do not value a course for which they pay nothing or much too little.

We do not think even those paying even the full cost of the course will begrudge anyone a scholarship if they need one. What people pay is confidential so no one will even know if there is a scholarship student in the course. We all know the burden of tremendous financial worry and how debilitating it can be. We need to pull together in these difficult times.
What is key is that the scholarship student do the homework. This is also key for everyone in the course. For those who do the homework, this is a very powerful course and it does what it says on the tin. It is the best way we know to weave mindfulness (living in the moment) into life. For those who don’t do the homework, you are wasting your money and all of our time.
The homework takes between 25 and 45 minutes six days per week. The homework involves a standard meditation practice, mindfully doing one small thing each day (e.g., cup of tea, washing face, listening to wind). Those who do the homework find that they have more time, which may seem paradoxical until you experience the effects of living more mindfully.
